It never was...

I had exited the chapel, feeling solemn as i walked down the main corridor
of the hospital. The corridor was seemingly empty for that time of day, quiet
and lonely. My purposeful stride and the rhythm of my footsteps echoing on the highly
polished floors somehow comforting as i resisted temptation to brush my fingertips
against the corridor walls.
Then there it was. A presence i felt more than seen, directed my gaze to the second floor.
Standing against the banister was a tall figure. The sun from the large window behind him making
a dark silhouette, with sun rays surrounding him. I felt a stare piercing through my soul.
My pace quickened, or did it slow down? I imagined it was you.
I learned something that day...no matter how much you want something, doesn't mean it's
going to happen. I lowered my eyes and continued past without even looking up as i got close enough.
It wasn't you, it never was.
